Aromatherapy Massage with Rieko Oshima-Barclay
The term “Aromatherapy” was coined by French chemist Ren Maurice Gattefoss in the 1920’s to describe the practice of using essential oils. Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plants (flowers, fruits, leaves, woods etc.) which have been widely recognized as beneficial for various health problems.
Each essential oil has its own unique combination of therapeutic properties. These properties include anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, analgesics, antidepressants, expectorant immune stimulants, relaxants and many more. Professional aromatherapy may be safe and beneficial for use in both acute and chronic conditions and for any age.
Aromatherapy affects the body and mind via smell, inhalation and skin penetration. When essential oils are diluted in a carrier oil and massaged into the skin, they are absorbed slowly into the blood stream and travel around the body having a therapeutic effect according to their properties. In aromatherapy massage, essential oils are primarily absorbed through the skin, and the scent of essential oils may have a powerful effect on the emotions. Essential oils are highly volatile and so they can enter the bloodstream through the lungs by inhalation during the massage. After a full consultation, Rieko chooses the appropriate essential oils according to the client’s condition. The client’s mental and physical problems, spiritual energy levels, and skin type are taken into account. The massage takes place on a couch.
Aromatherapy massage is very relaxing and it soothes the nervous system. It also stimulates the circulatory and lymphatic systems improving the supply of nutrients to the body tissues and aiding the elimination of toxins and waste products.
The first appointment includes a consultation (15-20 minutes) in order to complete a confidential medical checklist, devised to establish the most appropriate course of action.
