GARDEN PROJECT

How it began…

The plans were laid in the summer of 2017 and work commenced in the autumn. Since then, our gardening team at the Sunflower Centre has created a kitchen garden to offer educational, well-being and mindfulness activities as well as an opportunity for local individuals to join in communal gardening.

The garden space was designed by Elwood Amey, a local gardener and a trained homeopath, who has also run Forest Schools for children in his time.  Elwood managed and worked alongside several volunteers to transform the side plot next to the Sunflower kitchen/staffroom.  We now have a spacious outside classroom with raised beds in a series of terraces that make best use of the sloped ground.

The story continues…

Our kitchen garden has been flowering and bearing fruit for some summers now, and before the pandemic we running free gardening workshops for the local community with the help of local gardener Tom Allen. Obviously, the summer of 2020 was a different story…..

Since Spring 2021 we have been making a small start again – this time without the help of a professional gardener, but rather as a ‘share and learn by doing’ group of local residents (and Johanna from the Centre)
