Dr Jo Blundell, Clinical Psychologist
I am a clinical psychologist with over 15 years of experience working with children, young people and families, in the NHS and private practice. At the Sunflower Centre I offer consultation and psychological therapy for children, adolescents and parents.
My approach is warm, empathetic, and collaborative and I enjoy bringing art, play and creativity into sessions. I draw upon a range of therapeutic approaches and my skills include further training in systemic/family therapy and third-wave CBT approaches including Narrative Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). I also offer sessions for parents to build parents’ confidence and explore ways for helping you to support your child to overcome difficulties. Alongside private practice, I work as a Principal Clinical Psychologist within a major London hospital and have expertise in supporting children and young people experiencing acute or chronic health conditions (including asthma, allergies and other respiratory conditions) and those that have experienced medical trauma.
I understand a young person’s difficulties as occurring in the broader context of their life and often as an attempt to cope with the impact of difficult or traumatic experiences. I view it as an immense privilege to be invited into the lives of young people and their families and to walk alongside them as they navigate life’s challenges.
I aim to support young people to tell their stories in meaningful and empowering ways, to work towards living a fulfilling life that is based on their values, and what is most important to them.
I am HCPC registered and hold membership with the Association of Clinical Psychologists (ACP-UK).
How I work
Initial consultation (90 minutes)
Our initial session will be an opportunity for us to meet and get to know each other, and for me to learn about what is going well for you and your child as well as what might be more difficult. This will likely include meeting with your child individually and together as a family. I may also speak with you as their parent individually. Together we will develop a shared understanding of the challenges being faced and a plan for moving forward. This is also an opportunity for you and your child to decide whether you think I’m the right person to provide support for you.
Follow-up sessions and Reviews (50 minutes)
If you wish to proceed, I will provide a therapy plan for further sessions and arrange regular reviews as we move forward.
Taking a collaborative approach is very important to me so I make every effort to include parents/carers and school teams and other professionals where appropriate. I also encourage children and young people to be curious, ask questions and practise what we have learnt together outside of therapy.
I offer in-person sessions at The Sunflower Centre on Monday mornings (8am – 1pm). I can offer online sessions if required. Please contact me by email if you’d like to learn more and we can arrange a free 20-minute conversation to discuss the next steps.
